Why Your Short Links Get Blocked (and How to Stop It)

You send a link and it never arrives. Or it arrives with a warning page. Or the platform silently shows your post to nobody. Short links attract this treatment more than plain URLs, and the reasons are mechanical rather than mysterious.

Why shorteners get extra scrutiny

A short link hides its destination. That is the feature — and it is also exactly what a phishing campaign wants. Every spam filter, messaging app, and social platform therefore treats shortened URLs as unresolved until proven otherwise, and follows the redirect before deciding what to do with your message.

That means five separate things get judged, and any one of them can sink you.

1. The reputation of the short domain itself

This is the big one, and it is the reason a free public shortener can fail you through no fault of your own. When thousands of people share one domain, you inherit the worst behaviour on it. One phishing campaign on that domain and every link — including yours — starts hitting warning pages.

Using your own domain isolates your reputation entirely. It is the single highest-impact fix available, and it is the reason serious senders never share a shortener domain.

2. The reputation of the TLD

Filters weight the top-level domain, because abuse concentrates heavily in a handful of them. The cheap and free TLDs — the ones that cost a dollar or are given away — carry a spam association that a brand-new domain cannot outrun quickly.

If deliverability matters to you, this is worth real money at registration time. A more expensive TLD is not better technology; it is a barrier to bulk abuse, and filters know it.

3. The destination

The scanner follows your redirect. If the destination is flagged, your short link is flagged, no matter how clean your domain is. This catches people out when they link to a site they don't control — a marketplace listing, a file host, a partner's landing page. Check the destination independently before you wrap it.

4. Redirect chains

Short link to short link to tracking pixel to destination is a pattern that legitimate traffic rarely produces and phishing produces constantly. Some scanners stop following after a couple of hops and judge what they can see; others treat length itself as a signal. Keep it to one hop wherever you can.

5. Newness

A domain registered this morning with no history is unknown, and unknown skews toward suspicious. This is temporary and it is normal. It also means the worst possible moment to switch domains is the day before a launch — give a new domain a few low-stakes weeks before it carries anything important.

What actually helps

  • Own the domain. Everything else is secondary to this.
  • Use HTTPS end to end. A single insecure hop is enough for some filters.
  • Use readable back-halves. A link ending in /spring-catalogue reads as intentional; a random string reads as generated. This matters to humans deciding whether to click, and humans are also a filter.
  • Keep one hop. Wrap the final destination, not another tracker.
  • Warm up gradually. First real sends should be small and to engaged recipients.
  • Keep your own house clean. If your shortener lets anyone create links on your domain, one abusive user costs you the domain's reputation. Blocklist enforcement is a deliverability feature, not just a safety one.

How to test before you send

Send the link to yourself across the channels you actually use — email, WhatsApp, the platform you post on — and watch for interstitials or silent failures. Check that the destination resolves over HTTPS with a valid certificate. Then check your own analytics: if a link shows a burst of clicks with no human pattern behind it, you are watching scanners, which tells you the link is being inspected.

None of this is exotic. Own your domain, point it at something clean, keep the path short, and give it time. Set up a link on your own domain and stop inheriting somebody else's reputation.
