How to Put a Link in an Instagram Story

The old rule was that story links required 10,000 followers. That restriction was lifted — the link sticker is available broadly now, so if you've been avoiding story links because of the follower threshold, that reason is gone.

Adding a story link

Create your story, then tap the sticker icon and choose the link sticker. Paste the URL, and optionally replace the displayed text with something readable — "Shop the sale" rather than the raw address. Place it where it won't collide with the reply bar at the bottom or the profile name at the top.

If the sticker isn't there, update the app first; availability has varied by version and region.

Where Instagram allows links at all

Worth being clear, because people waste effort here:

  • Story link sticker — clickable, the main option
  • Bio link — clickable, permanent
  • DMs — clickable
  • Captionsnot clickable. A URL in a caption is decoration.
  • Comments — not clickable, and often filtered

So your real placements are stories, bio and DMs.

Custom sticker text changes the tap rate

The link sticker lets you replace the URL with your own label. Use it. "Shop the sale" or "Read the guide" outperforms a bare domain, because it answers what happens if I tap.

Keep it short — long labels wrap awkwardly and cover your content.

Tracking, because Instagram tells you almost nothing

Instagram's insights show sticker taps for a limited window, and the in-app browser strips the referrer, so your site analytics record the traffic as "direct".

Two consequences:

Use a dedicated short link per story. Not your bio link, not the one you used last week. A link per story means the tap count is unambiguous and survives long after Instagram's insight window closes.

Add UTMs if the destination is yours, so sessions attribute to Instagram rather than direct. Source instagram, medium social, content story.

The thing people forget: stories expire, links don't

A story disappears in 24 hours. The link keeps collecting taps afterwards — from saves, from shares to other people's stories, from DM forwards.

That means two things. Don't delete the link when the story expires; you'll break traffic that's still arriving. And don't reuse that link for the next story, or you'll merge two campaigns permanently.

Make the landing fast

Story viewers are moving quickly and often on mobile data. A heavy destination loses the tap between the swipe and the render. Test it on a throttled connection.

A repeatable routine

  1. New short link per story, readable back-half
  2. UTMs if the destination is yours
  3. Custom sticker text that says what happens
  4. Placed clear of the top and bottom UI
  5. Check taps the next day and compare against previous stories

That last step is where it becomes useful — after a few weeks you'll know which story formats actually drive taps, which is a question Instagram's own insights answer only vaguely.
